Hailed by the Boston Globe as a laboratory without walls, musical journey that draws the international Silk Road Ensemble’s members from countries as far and diverse as China, India, Spain, South Korea, Iran, Japan, Switzerland, Israel and the United States. With the founder, artistic director and ensemble member of a member of Yo-Yo Ma, this eclectic group at Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusetts, together, at two concerts in Ozawa Hall 22nd June and 24 2012 to carry out. Performances begin at 20.00 clock on both nights.

for us is like coming home, Yo-Yo Ma at Tanglewood said 12 years ago a group of musicians from all over the world for the first time it was together to form the Silk Road Ensemble. Then we were strangers, and many of us had only the language of music in common. Over the years we have returned several times to develop new music. Tanglewood is good if you will, the birthplace of the movement, and remains an inspiration to us.
both nights of the ensemble is inspired by international music composer Giovanni Sollima Sicily (Taranta the project) and Toad Perapaskero Romania (Turceasca). Completion of the program is performing music written by the members of the ensemble: Shristi played by Sandeep Das of India, the table; Mui Eiras of Galician Cristina Pato, who plays the bagpipes, and Ascending Bird by Colin Jacobsen, a violinist in the U.S. cooperation with the Iranian santur player Siamak Aghaei. The Silk Road Ensemble:
The Silk Road Ensemble is a collective of internationally renowned artists and songwriters from over 20 countries. Each run of the members of the ensemble meets one of the greatest artistic challenges of our time: to maintain the integrity of the art in the authentic traditions while nourishing global connections rooted. Many of the musicians for the first time together under the artistic direction of Yo-Yo Ma at a workshop at Tanglewood Music Center in Massachusetts in 2000. Since then, in various configurations, Ensemble artists have collaborated on a wide range of music and multimedia projects, presenting innovative performances that result from the eastern and western traditions and contemporary musical crossroads. The Silk Road Ensemble has recorded five albums and performed in order critical acclaim throughout Asia, Europe and North America.
Yo-Yo Ma:
multi-faceted career of cellist Yo-Yo Ma is testament to his continual search for new ways to communicate with the public and his personal desire for artistic growth and renewal. Mr. Ma maintains a balance between his engagements as soloist with orchestras worldwide and his recital and chamber music activities. His discography includes over 75 albums, including over 15 Grammy award winners. In addition to his work as founder and artistic director of the Silk Road Project, Mr. Ma also serves as the Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Institute for Learning, Access and Training. His work focuses on the transformative power of music can have on people’s lives, and increasing the number and diversity of the audience have the chance to experience their music in their communities.
Yo-Yo Ma was born in Paris to Chinese parents who later moved the family to New York. He began studying cello at the age of four, attended the Juilliard School and graduated in 1976 from Harvard University. He has received numerous awards including the National Medal of Arts 2001, 2006 Sonning Prize, which will receive 2008 World Economic Forum Crystal Award and the Presidential Medal of Freedom 2010th In 2011, Mr. Ma as a Kennedy Center honoree was recognized. Mr. Ma serves as a peace ambassador of the United Nations and as a member of the Presidium of the humanities. He has performed for eight U.S. presidents, most recently at the invitation of President Obama at the opening celebration of 56 years.
The Silk Road Project:
The Silk Road Project is a nonprofit arts-minded international cultural and educational organization that promotes innovation and learning through the arts. The cellist Yo-Yo Ma founded the Project in 1998 with a vision of connecting the neighborhoods of the world, bringing together artists and audiences around the world. The project is supported by the historical routes of the Silk Road inspired trade along the Silk Road as a modern metaphor for the exchange and learning in all cultures, art forms and disciplines.
Under the artistic direction of Yo-Yo Ma and the leadership of CEO and Executive Director Laura Freid the Silk Road Project presents performances by the celebrated Silk Road Ensemble, participating in cultural exchanges and residencies, leads workshops for students and works to leading cultural institutions to create educational programs and materials. Silk Road Connect, multidisciplinary project approach, the integration of the arts, enthusiastically to students and teachers to make connections in all areas of their lives and their studies. The development of new music is a central task of the Silk Road Project, which was involved in the commissioning and implementation of more than 70 new musical and multimedia works from composers and arrangers from around the world.
